What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of body work that treats the body as a whole.

Shiatsu is useful for:

  • people of all ages

  • alleviating many physical symptoms

  • health issues

  • stress management

  • wellbeing and lifestyle

Treatment is based on an understanding that our bodies are designed for movement. The practitioner uses her hands to apply a variety of techniques. These include broad pressure with the palms and point pressure with the thumbs, gentle stretches of the main muscles of the limbs and a variety of shaking and rocking mvements. It may also include gentle mobilisation of the joints. Movements are mostly timed with the breath which encourages the body to relax.

By using the body's natural range of movement in this way, you will find any stiffness is alleviated and the nervous system can calm down. This has a flow-on effect of encouraging your body's own natural healing capacity so that symptoms will diminish and disappear completely.

Specific techniques may be used to activate the energy in the meridians and increase the range of movement in the limbs and torso, neck, wrists and ankles so that you will feel flexible, strong and easy in your body after the treatment.

Shiatsu can be described as like an assisted form of yoga.

The Wellbeing Way of Zen Shiatsu is a style that has evolved from the Zen Shiatsu of Shizuto Masunaga and is dedicated to honouring the integrity and unique healing process of every client. Compassion is the centre of the practice.
